Macau beats Vegas at its own game
According to official statistics, in 2006 Macau, the tiny city on the southeastern Chinese coast, surpassed Las Vegas in terms of gambling revenue. Macau raked in $6.95 billion in gambling revenue, while the Strip got $6.69 billion.
Many of the big US casino developers, as Steve Wynn, contributed to the success of Macau, with Las Vegas-style casino and resorts. Before, Chinese businessman Stanley Ho has a monopoly on the local gambling industry, and his Lisboa Casino was the leading gaming property in town.
Despite the former Portoguese colony´s fast-paced development, Macau is not Las Vegas, at least not yet. While in Las Vegas you find people from every age and background, Macau is still the domain of high-rolling Asian players who sip tea while playing Baccarat according to Chinese numerology. So, when in Macau, do as the Chinese: aim at a lucky 8, stay away from the doomed 4 and try to piggy-back on the beginners´ luck.
